What is GeneSight Testing?

If you’re still wondering what GeneSight testing is, that’s absolutely fair – it’s a relatively new technique in the psychiatry field. So, what exactly is it? A GeneSight test is something that analyzes how a person’s genes might affect their reaction to medications that are prescribed to treat an array of mental health conditions – such as depression, anxiety, and so on. With this test, a clinician will have access to information about the effectiveness of medications for an individual, and even about the dosage levels that are likely to prove optimal in each situation. Needless to say, this can be enormously valuable for a patient’s outcome.

Traffic Light Systems

The results of a GeneSight test are based on the specific genetic profile of that individual, and psychiatrists can learn a lot about the best way to treat a patient using the results that are provided. Each medication that might be suitable for treating a particular condition are placed into one of three categories: red is for significant gene-drug interactions (problematic), yellow is for moderate gene-drug interactions (use with caution) and green is for using as directed by the medication’s instructions (no issues). Simple, straightforward, and effective.

Simple Testing

If you’re worried about the testing process being particularly invasive or difficult, there’s no reason to feel concerned – the testing procedures are actually very simple for our patients, only requiring a cheek swab. This can either be done on-site – at our offices – or from the comfort of your own home. The results do not require a great deal of time to come through either, which means we can make the most of the information quickly.

Optimal Results

Ultimately, a GeneSight test allows us to have access to reliable information about our patients’ gene profiles, and consequently, makes sure that we can deliver a medical treatment that is going to have the optimal impact. We only want the best for our patients, and this type of service has a significant, positive influence on treatment quality.
